Town of Canton Volunteer Fire & EMS Department Responds to Early Morning Motor Vehicle Crash that Sent a Car into a Stream

Canton, CT Saturday, March 10, 2018: 6:40 am…. Over a dozen members of the Town of

Canton Volunteer Fire & EMS Department responded to an early morning motor vehicle

accident, at the 600 block of Cherry Brook Road on the Canton/Barkhamsted town line.

Upon arrival, fire and EMS crews found a car in the stream below a bridge, with the

driver still trapped inside. Once the vehicle was stabilized, using a winch and Rescue Jacks,

Canton’s EMS and fire crews extricated the patient using a Holmatro cutting/spreading tool.

They deployed a stokes basket and, with the assistance of a ground ladder, removed

the patient who was then transported to a local hospital.

Fire crews remained on the scene for over three hours, until the vehicle was removed from

the stream. Mutual aid from Barkhamsted East Volunteer Fire Company was requested

to close Route 179, at the Town line, to traffic while Canton’s crews worked on the rescue

and vehicle removal.

No injuries to fire or EMS personnel were reported.

Canton’s volunteer firefighters, EMTs and Paramedics arrived to the accident scene on:

Engines 1 & 6, Rescue 9, Squad 5 and Canton’s Ambulance.
