CANTON–A house fire left a house charred and a family homeless, but thankfully no one was hurt.

On Friday afternoon, a fire broke out in a house on East Hill Road, near Hilltop Drive, in Canton. People were home at the time, but were able to get out safely before the fire grew.

However, the fire did grow. Because of how windy it was on Friday, with gusts reaching 30 to 40 mph, the fire spread and continued to reignite in areas that had already been put out.

Because of the issues, firefighters had to use a significant amount of water to put out the blaze, an issue considering it’s a rural area with no fire hydrants. Tanker engines had to come and go several times to refill and bring more water to the scene.

The home is a complete loss, with part of the roof collapsing and the walls and floors being charred.

The fire department is investigating the cause.
