New Chief Named for Volunteer Fire & EMS Department

CANTON — The Canton Board of Selectmen have unanimously chosen Craig Robbins to be the next chief of the Town of Canton Volunteer Fire & EMS Department.
The decision was made in executive session Jan. 13, with selectmen tasked to choose between current chief Richard Hutchings and Robbins, the deputy fire chief, the only two people who applied for the position. Robbins’ term is effective Feb. 1 and expires Dec. 31, 2019. He has been a member of the department since 1998 and said he chose to pursue the chief position because he felt it was time to “move up the chain and take on more responsibility.”
He replaces longtime chief Hutchings, who joined the department in 1997 and was appointed chief in 1996 and again in 2003. Chief Ad- ministrative Officer Robert Skinner, in a Jan. 14 memo, offered his thanks to Hutchings for his “long and dedicated service.”
“Mr. Hutchings has provided leadership and guidance to the department, including overseeing the combining of three private departments into one town department,” he wrote. “Mr. Hutchings can take great pride in where he has led the department. I am confident all fire/EMS personnel will join with me in thanking ‘Hutch’ for his commitment to the department and the town in which he lives.”
In a statement, Hutchings said he wishes Robbins “the best of luck” and offers, reassurance that he will re- main a resource to serve the community. “It’s been one of my greatest pleasures to lead, guide and mentor Canton’s volunteer firefighters, EMTs and fire police over the past decades of challenges, changes and hard work,” he said. “There is, as always, more to be done.”
