Canton Volunteer Firefighters Respond to Leaking Propane Tank: 500-Gallon Tank Forces Evacuation of Drake Lane Area

December 24, 2015, 1:45pm: The Town of Canton Volunteer Fire & EMS Department responded to a report of a strong odor of propane in the area of 9 Drake Lane in Canton.

Upon arrival, volunteer firefighters located an actively leaking 500-gallon propane tank in the backyard of a residence. The tank, which had reportedly been filled recently, was leaking off the top value. The residential area adjacent to the property, where the tank was situated, was evacuated.

Chief Richard Hutchings requested that a tech from the propane company and a rep from the DEEP be dispatched to the scene. Firefighters slowed the leak substantially and metered the area as they waited for arrival of the tech and the rep.

About 15 firefighters, EMTs and Fire Police responded on: Ladder 2, Engines 3, 4, 6, Utility 8, Rescue 9, Tanker 7 and the Department’s Ambulance.

The scene was turned over to the DEEP at 2:58pm and the leak was verified as stopped at that time.
