December 24, 2015: 9:30am: The Town of Canton Volunteer Fire & EMS Department responded to a car fire at 10 Front Street at the Collinsville Axe Factory, Collinsville, CT , just as the last business day before the Christmas holiday was getting under way.

Upon arrival, volunteer firefighters found an active fire in the engine and cab of a commercial vehicle. Firefighters used an ax and halligan bar, then a saw to force open the cab door, while other crew members fought the fire in the engine.

The attack team of firefighter Zach Goeben and Fire LT Joe Ouimette worked with firefighters Chris Melitte, Dan Barnhart, Joe Viener and John Gotaski to breach the cab and knock down the fire. An additional 15 firefighters, EMTs and Fire Police supported the crew on the emergency scene. Businesses in 30-50 Depot Street were evacuated as a precaution.

Overhaul of the potentially haz mat site kept fire crews on the scene for an additional 60/90 minutes.

Responding apparatus included: Canton’s Ladder 2 (for attack), Engines 3, 4, 6 (for water supply), and the Department’s Ambulance. Mutual aid from Avon Volunteer Fire Department and Burlington Volunteer Fire Department was requested, then canceled.

Anyone interested in becoming a member of the Town of Canton Volunteer Fire & EMS Department can visit, or drop by  Collinsville, North Canton or Canton firehouses Monday evenings during the Department’s weekly practice drill at 7:00 p.m.
