Canton Compass Fire Old Canton Rd

The Saturday night fire on Old Canton Road resulted from discarded ashes that had been stored in the garage the day before, Canton Fire Marshal Tim Tharau said Monday afternoon.

The ashes were put in a plastic container, some time after noon on Friday, Tharau said. While the ashes were cool to the touch, the incident is a good reminder for homeowners to always put ashes in a metal container and place outside well away from any structures or combustibles, he said.

They should never be store in a home, garage or shed while awaiting disposal. Watering down the ashes and using a metal cover over them is also a good idea.

“With ashes there’s really no time frame on how long they could be smoldering,” Tharau said.

The Saturday night fire completely destroyed the garage at 11 Old Canton Road and caused damage to that home and some more minor damage to a neighboring residence.

The homeowner discovered the fire when he went into the garage and the opening of the door added oxygen to the blaze, Tharau said.

The homeowners and nearby neighbors got out safely, fire officials said, and no injuries were reported.

The fire was reported at 10:31 p.m. and volunteer firefighters were on scene at 10:40 p.m. In addition to the town of Canton Volunteer Fire and EMS Department, volunteers from Simsbury and Avon responded. Town of Canton Volunteer Fire and EMS Department fire police closed access to the scene and the Canton Police Department also responded to the scene.

The fire was declared under control at 11:30 and some fire personnel were on scene until 2:21 a.m.

Tharau praised firefighting efforts, stating that those fighting it did a good job in keeping the blaze from burning down the nearby homes.

“Being all volunteer these, guys are dedicated,” he said. “They made a nice stop. People should be proud of the volunteer fire department in town.”

Tharau said winter is a time of high fire risk and people should take several precautions with added safety hazards such as holiday decorations, lights, candles, trees, generators, holiday cooking and more.

Everyday fire tips should also be addressed, such as ensuring that smoke and carbon monoxide detectors have fresh batteries and are not used beyond the manufacturer’s suggested life span.
