Officials Respond to Oil Spill on Powder Mill Road
By: John Fitts, Editor
The town of Canton Volunteer Fire and EMS Department responded to Powder Mill Road, near the Farmington River for a diesel oil spill late Tuesday afternoon.
Fire chief Richard Hutchings said an unknown quantity of oil spilled and did get into the storm drain.
The department has placed several absorbent booms and shortly after 5 pm the chief said the oil at that point was in a “sump hole” portion of the drain system and had not reached the storm drain outflow or the river.
The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection arrived on scene around 5:30 p.m.
Fire officials said the site is a “tank farm,” where Home heating oil drivers come to fill their trucks.
