(Updated at 10:32 a.m. Thursday) Firefighters were able to extinguish a blaze that broke out around the porch area of 185 Albany Turnpike at approximately 8:30 p.m. Wednesday night.

Town of Canton Volunteer Fire and EMS Department Chief Richard Hutchings said the fire was largely contained to the mulch and vegetation on one side of the building’s porch. No wires were down and the cause of the fire was not immediately known, he said. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Fire Marshal Adam Libros said Thursday morning.

According to the town’s records, the building dates back to 1783. The town’s bicentennial Commemorative Book indicates it was once a church that stood on The Green and was moved across Route 44 in 1838. In recent years, it has been used as commercial property.
